Yagyas

Vedic Yagyas are a technology of consciousness to create desired changes in the material world through use of Vedic sounds (mantras) in prescribed manners. They are the archetypal act of creation which connect the Transcendence with the manifest realty. Through Yagya every aspect of the universe is reconnected to its source and the world is nurtured and revitalized.

Vedas are representation of the transcendental form of knowledge that is captured and is contained in the sound syllables (mantras). The mantras are sound vibrations that perpetually exist in the unified field of natural law, and which were cognized by ancient seers and expressed in their vocal utterances. They are considered to be primordial vibrations that were heard (shruti), and are not man-made ideas. Vedic mantras embody the perfect correlation between name and form, and correct application of them unfolds the original form of knowledge in man's awareness and gives him mastery over natural law.

Having offered mastery over natural law, Vedas and Vedic lore prescribe procedures for performance of Yagyas to achieve various objectives of man’s life. The Vedic man sees expansion of happiness as the purpose of evolution. Thus, he asks for fulfillment of desires that lead to a happy life and celebrates the fullness of life which is gained through living in accord with natural law. The most fundamental law of creation is that of action and reaction—law of karma. One enjoys the merit of right action and suffers consequence of negative acts. Yagyas are the most effective mean for accelerating results of good action and diminishing impact of unwanted reactions.

The performance of Vedic Yagyas involve incantation of specific mantras (compilation of syllables) from the Vedas and other related bodies of knowledge together with offering of prescribed items such as grains, fruits, dairy products like milk and clarified butter, sugarcane juice or candy, etc. into fire or at the altar symbolizing surrender of man’s possessions and aspects of his life to their source to be renewed and returned back to him. Each Yagya begins with enunciation of the intent and purpose for which Yagya is done (Sankalp), the name of the person who is initiating the Yagya, and the offering which is being made. By awakening the Creative Intelligence in his awareness through performance of Yagyas and aligning his life with the totality of natural law, man gains fulfillment of specified desires or protection against undesirable and adverse influences.

One of the major rediscoveries in the field of Vedic Science was the understanding by His Holiness Maharishi Mahesh Yogi that yagyas are significantly more effective if the Vedic Pundit performs the yagya from the level of para – transcendental consciousness. Vedas establish that knowledge is the foundation of creative processes, and that there is a creative energy or organizing power which is inherent in knowledge. They declare that primordial knowledge (Vedas) and its organizing power are structured in the transcendental field of existence, which must be known in order to gain mastery over natural law. It is, therefore, important for gaining maximum benefit from the Yagya that the mind of Vedic pundits who recite the mantras has been opened to this level of reality. At Anamay Ashram, Yagyas are performed by highly qualified pundits who have integrated transcendental consciousness into their daily activities through regular practice of the Transcendental Meditation technique and TM Sidhi program.

Vedic Yagyas may be performed for material gain or spiritual progress, or to remove obstacles and obstructions on the path of progress. Each life time presents opportunities for blossoming and fruition of some of man’s karma. Vedic astrology (Jyotish) is an aspect of Vedic sciences which is closely related to performance of Yagyas. By observing the arrangement of planetary bodies presented in a snap-shot at one’s birth time, science of Jyotishi can determine the opportunities and obstacles presented in one’s life time and calculate the timing of unfolding events. It is common in India to have a child’s birth chart analyzed immediately after birth so any remedial Yagya could be performed as soon as possible. According to Jyotish, the unfolding of events are associated with impact of different planets based on their position in one’s birth chart. Remedial Yagyas are generally performed to reduce the negative influence of these planetary bodies during the respective periods of one’s life. Other Yagyas are performed to achieve an objective sought by the individual, such as success in one’s undertakings, prevalence in disputes, recovery from illness or surgical operations, materialization of specific desires, or any other specified wish.

Date, time, and place of birth are needed for a practitioner of jyotish to analyze the birth chart and calculate the timing of periods when events unfold. On the basis of this information remedial Yagyas will be recommended. Same information will be required for other Yagyas as well.
